“To be able to finish in the final, albeit without a win, I’m just very grateful for the amount of support I had particularly from Brendon [McCullum] and Mike [Hesson]. To be able to get back from a number of injuries and to be here and to be part of it … is something I’ll always treasure,” he said.

He made a short comeback to the Test arena and played one Test against Pakistan late last year after a gap of two and half years and had indicated already that he wouldn’t be donning the Blackcaps jersey post the World Cup, so this decision didn’t come as a surprise to anybody.

Vettori ends his international career on a high as he found a place in the team of the tournament courtesy of his brilliant performances with the ball throughout the World Cup.

He became the youngest Kiwi to make a debut when he played his first game in the year 1997. He has picked up 361 wickets in his Test career and had also managed to score more than 4000 runs.

In the ODI arena though, he is their most capped player and their leading wicket-taker with 305 wickets to his name.
