The demo, titled the “Gates of Hell,” will include the entire opening level of the game and introduce players to “Dante Alighieri’s re-imagined past as a crusader who returns home to Florence to discover his true love, Beatrice, murdered.  As her soul escapes her body, she is kidnapped by the dark shadow form of Lucifer.  Sworn to her rescue, Dante must journey to the Gates of Hell and beyond to battle undead monstrosities, unholy boss demons, and Death himself.” Visceral Games is promising that gamers will experience the Nine Circles of Hell at a speed of 60 frames per second.

EA did not explain why the demo would release on different dates, and the move is somewhat puzzling, since Dante’s Inferno has less competition on Microsoft’s console. Perhaps EA is showing PS3 gamers some early love in the hope that they’ll return the favor despite the God of War III juggernaut on the horizon. Is this a savvy marketing move by EA? Or is EA playing equal-opportunity offender since Hanukkah starts December 11th and Christmas Eve is on December 24? What do you think?

Whatever the reason, gamers on both systems will have plenty of time to send grandma screaming from the room in horror before the full game releases.

Dante’s Inferno releases for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Sony PSP on February 9, 2010.
