However, Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game didn’t live up to the hype for many fans. Those in Europe and North America who’d preordered the collector’s edition of the game received it early, and began to pick apart the Dark Souls tabletop RPG, finding plenty of bugs inside. From misspellings to rules that contradicted the game, to spells that became more difficult to cast the more a player progressed, the game had plenty of glaring issues that players wasted no time in pointing out. They criticized the game’s developer Steamforged for its seemingly unfinished game.

Now, Steamforged has responded to the criticism of Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game with an apology. The developer first thanked the Dark Souls community for all its feedback, stating that it has listened to the comments made and recognized the importance of the issues within the game. Rather than release online supplements and rule changes, Steamforged is offering fans a new copy of the printed rulebook which will fix the issues of Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game.
As these issues are plentiful within the initial rulebook, this will likely result in a delay before fans can get their hands on a new printed copy. Steamforged promises that details on a new release date and how fans can get a copy of Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game will be coming soon. One of the main sources of the issues fans have pointed out is in Steamforged’s combination of Dark Souls lore with Dungeons and Dragons as a gameplay base. This led to things like classes crossing over from Dungeons and Dragons that didn’t exist in Dark Souls, such as the Paladin class.
Many fans were hyped for Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game when it was first revealed back in December of 2021, as it looked to be another great addition to a stacked lineup of tabletop games coming out in 2022. In its current state it won’t dethrone Dungeons and Dragons as the most popular tabletop RPG, but Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game will at least see some decent fixes soon, hopefully removing the initial disappointment fans received.
