Originally releasing in 2016, Darkest Dungeon vastly exceeded Red Hook Studios expectations in terms of sale and critical acclaim. Since then, the studio has produced several DLC expansions, and in an announcement that appeared to be an April Fool’s joke, the developer confirmed Darkest Dungeon will receive multiplayer DLC in the future. A sequel was announced early in 2019, but scant information has arrived since the teaser trailer was unveiled.

While no hard information about the board game’s mechanics have been announced yet, Darkest Dungeon has revealed an impressive set of painted miniatures representing the game’s classes. The video game’s RNG-heavy madness and stress management system should translate handsomely to dice rolls or card draws, and it is easy to imagine how procedural dungeons could be captured via modular map tiles, similar to Betrayal at House on the Hill. The most crucial element Mythic Game’s needs to capture, however, is the sense of dread and relentless pressure that establishes Darkest Dungeon as one of the hardest RPG’s ever.

Franchise fans will likely have a long wait ahead of them, for both the board game and video game sequel. No release date has been revealed for Darkest Dungeon 2, and since the Kickstarter campaign is launching in Fall, the board game likely won’t appear until 2021 at the earliest. Fortunately, there are plenty of other grim-dark titles that will satisfy Darkest Dungeon veterans in the meantime.

The Darkest Dungeon board game’s Kickstarter campaign is launching this fall.
